From Tumblers to a 9-Foot Archway: The Story Behind a Teacher's Talavera Welcome

TL;DR: We built a 9-foot Talavera-patterned archway for a teacher's classroom, made from laser-cut wood squares finished two different ways: some hand-painted blue using laser-cut stencils, others direct UV printed with texture. It's a one-of-a-kind piece, and a reminder that back-to-school season should be about more than getting kids ready. Teachers deserve to start the year strong too.

WHAT WE BUILT

A local teacher wanted something special waiting for her when she walked into her classroom for the new school year: a full wall installation shaped like an archway, nearly 9 feet tall, made entirely from 5x5 inch wood tiles. Each tile carries part of a traditional Talavera pattern in blue and white, so the whole thing reads as one continuous design once it's mounted floor to ceiling. It's a one-of-a-kind piece built specifically for this classroom.

THE TECHNIQUES BEHIND IT

Every wood square started as a laser-cut piece, and from there the tiles were finished two different ways. Some were painted white as a base, then a separate stencil, laser cut in the Talavera pattern, was placed directly on the wood. Blue paint was rolled and dabbed over the stencil by hand, then the stencil was peeled away to reveal the finished pattern underneath. Others were UV printed directly onto the wood, with the pattern applied straight to the surface with texture. Both methods use the same core equipment behind everything else we make, a laser and a UV printer, just put to a very different, much larger use than a typical gift.

TEACHERS DESERVE A STRONG START TOO

Back-to-school season tends to be framed around getting kids ready: new supplies, first-day outfits, maybe a gift for the teacher on the way out the door. What gets talked about far less is that teachers need their own version of a strong start. They spend the whole year giving their students patience, structure, and encouragement, often well past what the job actually asks of them. A classroom that feels intentional and cared for from day one isn't just decoration. It's a small way of saying that the person responsible for that room deserves a space that helps them do their best work too, not only the students who walk through it. Teachers give so much to the kids in front of them all year. They deserve to start that year in a space that gives something back to them first.
